Website Design Competition: Design Brief

When a designer does work for a client, she or he usually receives a design brief, which specifies (explains clearly) what the client expects. It is very important to keep to this brief, otherwise the client won't be able to use your design.

In this competition, we will evaluate entries according to the specifications provided, so make sure you keep to your design brief!

  1. Design, using imaging software, the front page of a website for the e-Kapa Youth, GIS & Urban Nature Project.
  2. The website should appeal to young people and clearly reflect the purpose of the Project. The purpose of the project is to involve senior high school youth in using GIS technology to monitor nature in the City of Cape Town. The information gathered by youth will be used to help conserve nature in the City.
  3. Your web page must include the following design elements (see layout below):
    • A banner heading with the following text: e-Kapa Youth, GIS & Urban Nature Project
    •  A page footer incorporating the logos of the organisations that are partners in this project: City of Cape Town, SANBI, BGIS, GISSA, Khanya Project, Western Cape Education Department, TMF, WWF, EnviroEds. These logos are available here
    • Buttons, either on the left hand side of the page or just below the banner heading, to link to the following pages:
    • Home - this is the page you are designing
    • Introduction - explains the background to the project
    • How to... - instructions for working with GIS and monitoring data on this website
    • Nature reserves - links to the relevant information and data for Nature Reserves
    • School activities (curriculum based learning activities for teachers and learners)
    • Contact us
    • Text introducing the project (the text is available below or here (MS Word).
  4. Design suggestions:
    • Decide on an appropriate style for your web page, including theme, colour scheme, fonts, and button design.
    • Use digital photographs (your own photos or the photos available here jpegs) and/or graphics to illustrate the site. You can integrate illustrations into the banner heading and/or the page footer to create an appropriate "look and feel" for the web page.
  5. Once you are happy with your design, save it as a jpeg at a resolution of 600 x 800 pixels. Give the file your full name, e.g. yourname.jpg.
  6. Send the image of your design plus your completed entry form as attachments to Martin Cocks at mcocks@uwc.ac.za by 16h00 on Friday 29 August 2008. Late entries will not be considered.

Evaluating your design
Your entry will be evaluated according to the following criteria:

  • Fulfils the design brief (above)
  • Clearly reflects the purpose of the project
  • Uses electronic design technology effectively
  • Design is aesthetically pleasing

Welcome to the Home Page of the e-Kapa Youth, GIS & Urban Nature Project!
This project encourages high schools in the City of Cape Town to monitor plants, animals and the environment using Geographic Information Systems (GIS). Senior classes can enjoy GIS field trips to nature reserves, and individuals can undertake their own GIS-based monitoring projects in their communities.

The data collected by schools during field trips is stored on this website. You can download and analyse monitoring data, upload your own GPS points, and work with GIS layers to make your own maps and GIS projects.

On this website you will find:

  • General information on the Youth, GIS & Urban Nature Project and how you can get involved
  • Specific information on the nature reserves where you can go on a GIS field trip
  • Curriculum-based lesson ideas for teachers and learners
  • GIS data collected by schools at the nature reserves to download and analyse
  • Satellite photography and GIS layers that you can use to create your own GIS projects
  • Links to other organisations involved in the Youth, GIS & Urban Nature Project.

We hope that you enjoy using GIS to help conserve nature in the City of Cape Town!
