The National wetland Map (types) represents a depiction of location, extent, distribution and characteristics of wetlands in the Republic of South Africa (including pats of Lesotho and Swaziland). It should be noted that is a product of work in progress. The areas that have been identified on the National Wetland Map (types) meet the National Wetland Inventory classification of a wetland on a satellite image as described by Thompson, et al (2002) and the NLC2000 wetlands and water bodies classification. Also in this layer the inland water bodies from CDSM are included.

It should be noted that every attempt has been made to present major wetland areas as accurately as possible. However, due to limitations of scale and availability of data, small isolated wetlands could not be mapped. The South African National Biodiversity Institute gives no warranty, expressed or implied, as to the accuracy, reliability, or completeness of the data. Persons intending to engage in activities involving any wetland related resources should seek the advice of appropriate and/or relevant National, Provincial or Local authority/agency that is vested with the responsibility of wetland resources management and planning. It is the responsibility of the data user to use the data appropriately and consistent within the limitations of geospatial data in general. This data and related graphics (if available) are not legal documents and are not intended to be used as such and this information is dynamic and may change over time.

It is strongly recommended that the data is directly acquired from a SANBI server and not indirectly through other sources which may have changed the data in some way. This disclaimer applies both to individual use of the data and aggregate use with other data.

The South African National Biodiversity Institute, its partners and service providers shall not be held liable for improper or incorrect use of the data described and/or contained herein.
