map overview

Biomes of South Africa, Lesotho and Swaziland

The region of southern Africa encompassed by these three countries is divided into nine vegetation biomes, including desert in the northwest of South Africa, and a thin Indian Ocean coastal belt in the East. Within the countries, there are several areas of vegetation that are atypical of the surrounding biome (typically along rivers, but also in other areas), which are highlighted on the map as azonal vegetation types.
